2009 Austin APNs Student Scholarship Recipients : Melanie Hampton and Kitty Woo Ham

Congratulations to Melanie Hampton and Kitty Woo Ham our 2009 recipients of the 2009 Student Scholarship Awards

Ms. Melanie Hampton has maintained a 4.0 GPA while attending Liberty University's Master of Science in Nursing Program; Acute Care Clinical Nurse Specialist. Expected date of graduation is December 2009.

Ms. Hampton earned her BSN at UT Austin in 2001. Ms. Hampton works part time in the Emergency Department at Scott & White Hospital Round Rock while pursuing her advanced degree. Ms. Hampton has a passion for transplant medicine and has volunteered her time with TOSA; Texas Organ Sharing Alliance.

Her contemporaries all praise her character and personal initiative to seek out learning opportunities beyond the requirements of her degree program. In Melanie's own words she "enjoys a challenge and (is) interested in creating a new path", If (she) can't find what she is looking for then she "will create it." Ms. Hampton is presenting a business proposal to Scott & White ED physician's group detailing the use of NP/CNS practitioners in the emergency setting.

Ms. Kitty Woo Ham is a Post Master's Family Nurse Practitioner at the University of Texas, Austin. GPA 3.67 with an expected graduation date of May 2010. Ms. Woo Ham earned her MSN in Nursing Systems/Nursing Administration from the University of Texas, Austin in 2004; She earned a Bachelors in General Health Sciences in May 2003 from Purdue University.

Ms. Woo Ham has worked at Seton Northwest Hospital Medical/ Surgical floor as a staff nurse and at Austin Community College as a nursing instructor while pursuing her degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner.

Ms. Woo Ham has actively promoted the professional role of nurses with her involvement as the Governmental Affairs Chairperson for the Texas Nurses Association and as President of the Association of Nurses in Graduate School.

Ms. Woo Ham's career goal is to be a direct health care provider in the community with a focus on preventative care; recognizing that effective primary care promotes overall health outcomes for patients as well as a reduction in the high cost of healthcare. Ms. Woo Ham's contemporaries praise her motivation, resourcefulness and leadership abilities.
