Position Description

Austin Kidney Associates is currently seeking a Director of Advanced Practitioners and Nursing staff for its preeminent nephrology practice.  This is an exempt management position responsible for identifying, planning and coordinating APRN, RN, and LVN contributions to successfully achieve clinical outcome goals of the organization.  The role functions 75% to 80% in an administrative capacity, and 20% to 25% providing clinical care.  The position supervises all Advanced Nurse Practitioners (APRNs), Registered Nurses (RNs), and Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs), and also supports the practice’s physicians.  The position supports all primary physician office locations, secondary (satellite) office locations, and DaVita and Satellite Healthcare dialysis facilities.  The ideal candidate will be an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse with 5 years’ experience and 3 years’ experience in a clinical management role.  The position reports to the practice’s Executive Director.


The Director of Advanced Practitioners and Nursing staff will:

  • Translate practice goals into clinical care models using APRNs, RNs, and LVNs (individually or collectively “provider(s)”)
  • Develop provider workflows based on collaboration with Practice Operations team
  • Develop and champion systems for efficient and effective use of APRNs, RNs, and LVNs in the practice
  • Design training programs and materials for APRNs, RNs, and LVNs to accomplish practice goals and objectives
  • Collaborate with the Practice Leadership to identify APRN, RN, and LVN resource needs and assignments
  • Work with practice physicians to develop, implement, and update the CKD clinic protocol
  • Represent the APRN, RN, and LVN voice to the Executive Director, President, and Board of Directors
  • Serve on Committees as assigned by the Executive Director
  • Perform dialysis rounds at least twice a month in assigned dialysis unit(s)
  • Perform monthly visits with home dialysis patients in assigned dialysis clinics
  • Assess, diagnose, and manage complications of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) appropriately within APRN, RN, and LVN scope of practice and in collaboration with the rounding nephrologist
  • Strive to meet quality indicators according to CMS conditions of coverage
  • Develop a plan for all Central Venous Catheters (CVCs) and transition to arteriovenous (AV) access or peritoneal (PD) catheter placement and use. Communicate plan with the dialysis unit and rounding nephrologist/medical director regarding any patient with a dialysis CVC.
  • Perform or arrange to be performed an annual history and physical for each dialysis patient in whom an examination has not been performed in the preceding year per CMS Conditions of Coverage Guidelines
  • Support the patient and family through Advanced Care Planning (ACP) sessions in decisions regarding end-of-life measures
  • Review all hospitalizations for assigned ESRD patients
  • Perform or arrange to be performed a Transition of Care (TOC) visit with patients who have recently been discharged from the hospital
  • Attend and contribute to monthly CQI/QAI meeting as schedule allows
  • Hold team members accountable with clear objectives, key performance indicators (KPI’s), policies and procedures
  • Drive high performance in all team members through managing and coaching and providing quality feedback
  • Recruit and select high performers, develop talent and then recognize and reward performance in accordance with the AKA compensation and bonus plan
  • Facilitate regular team meetings to discuss issues, share knowledge, share achievements, provide training and direction.
  • Identify training and development needs and provide the resources needed to develop team members.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Director



  • Master’s prepared NP from accredited program
  • Valid TX license as a Registered Nurse and an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse
  • Certified as a Nurse Practitioner by ANCC or AANP
  • Certification in Nephrology via appropriate NP track preferred
  • DEA license preferred
  • BLS Certified
  • Minimum five years of experience as an advanced practitioner providing direct patient care in an outpatient setting
  • Minimum three years of experience in a clinical management role
  • Proficient in Word, Excel, & Outlook. Competent in multiple electronic health record systems.
  • Excellent communication skills. Able to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization.
